Ketabi Projects is pleased to present Sous le Saule, a new body of work by painter Idir Davaine, inaugurating the artist’s first solo exhibition in Paris.
Idir Davaine paints as a musician would compose music: he associates each form and each color with a particular element or emotion, taking care to maintain the rhythm and balance of the whole. Once finished, the work forms a story to which only the artist knows the secret. We who look at these works have only our eyes and our imagination to build our own narrative. However, we are not totally lost. With intuition as our guide, we can detect pieces of vegetation - such as a field of tall grass or a body of water. Mineral, animal or anthropomorphic forms can appear which recollect to some observers the bones in certain Japanese prints. Idir draws from his personal archives of recent photographs taken on the fly, to observe and enhance forms that intrigue him. He then converges these forms on the canvas which then guide the meaning that will be attributed to them. “ I like to trust the associations of ideas that a particular light or shadow, a point of view or a strange object arouses in me; a farm machine for example turns into an organic form and simply becomes a circle that repeats itself”.
