Ara Starck, PHAOS: Ketabi Bourdet - 22, passage Dauphine, 75006 Paris
Ketabi Bourdet a la joie de présenter Phaos, première exposition de l’artiste française Ara Starck à la galerie.
Ketabi Bourdet is delighted to present Phaos, French artist Ara Starck's first exhibition at the gallery. An immersive, luminous exploration, Phaos features monumental works and more intimate formats, as well as a series of stained-glass windows. The exhibition will showcase the complex interplay of shapes and colors characteristic of the artist's universe.
The title of the exhibition derives from ancient Greek and means "light". This light, far from being limited to simple visual clarity, embodies a spiritual and philosophical quest for revelation and knowledge. Ara Starck uses this concept to explore the contrasts between light and shadow, the visible and the invisible, what is said and what is not.The artist presents a series of monumental canvases that captivate with their dynamic figures and forms, between abstraction and figuration, whose atmosphere recalls the artist's youth, when she was an assistant to the painter Gérard Garouste. These fluid, dynamic works embody the artist's quest for light and understanding. The canvases, hung on the wall or placed on the floor and supported by slender metal rods, stand like large, sloping windows, opening onto mental landscapes in which light plays a central role. Each canvas has a unique feature: they are painted on both sides, revealing an innovative approach by the artist. The front sides are bursting with vivid colors, reflecting the vitality and light of life.
In contrast, the backs, in black and white acrylic, offer a calmer, more introspective vision. This duality creates a striking visual dialogue, allowing viewers to follow the artist's creative process, from the preparatory phase to the finished work. Finally, a new series of paintings in a more domestic format will echo the larger canvases, in a more intimate atmosphere.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is PHAOS (I-IX), a series of leaded stained-glass pieces originally presented in winter 2023 at the Made in Cloister Foundation, in the former cloister of the Santa Caterina a Formiello church in Naples. Designed in collaboration with one of southern Italy's last master glassmakers, the stained-glass panels reveal themselves differently according to the variations in natural light, multiplying the visual experience for visitors.
"The exhibition focuses on what is visible and what is not, what is hidden and what is revealed, what is said and what is whispered" explains the artist.
Through Phaos, Ara Starck invites us to reflect on light as a symbol of knowledge and truth. By transcending the limits of the visible, the artist offers us a plunge into the depths of the human soul, where light, Phaos, reveals what is often hidden.
